The common thread, running through Malaya, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq is clear. The very people whose hearts and minds the west claims to be trying to win are the ones who are on the receiving end of its enormous destructive military power. And thus the bankruptcy of such claims are revealed. How can you win the support of people whose family and friends you are killing?

Due to several close personal ties with the nation of South Korea, I have been following the story of the 23 Korean citizens kidnapped in Afghanistan with great concern. Now a second hostage has been killed by the Taleban and unless there is a breakthrough in negotiations soon this terrible situation may get worse before it gets better. The Korean government has little influence with an Afghan government reluctant to cut another deal with the kidnappers after previous controversial prisoner exchanges.

The few reports that do escape Iraq regarding the generally ignored air war that is already going on there paint a terrible picture of slaughter from the skies and if the US pulls its troops back into fortified bases and escalates the bombing this will get worse. The signs are already there in Afghanistan, as the NATO commander, General Dan McNeill, now known as “Bomber McNeill”, changes US strategy and cranks up the civilian deaths.

Sooner or later the “coalition” (or perhaps that should be “axis”) of foreign powers which invaded Iraq, committing the supreme war crime in the process, and are fighting the Taleban in Afghanistan will realise that they are not winning. Britain and America are involved in a murderous fiasco in Iraq and a growing disaster in Afghanistan, two conflicts the imperial powers simply cannot win.
